"What if there was a place for moms/caregivers to get together and share ideas outside of a stuffy medical conference? AND to slip out of survival mode for a weekend? AND to celebrate the chaos wherever they are on this journey?" ...Tyra Skibington, Mom of Darby (Pallister-Killian Syndrome)
Meet the Team:
Tyra Skibington, Co-Facilitator. Tyra's background in health and fitness has been a leading force in her life. Her daughter's birth and diagnosis of Pallister-Killian Syndrome (PKS) took her life a little 'left' when she thought it was going 'right'. PKS involves deaf blindness, low muscle tone, seizures and severe global delays. For Tyra and family, this means between 40-60 medical appts per year; pumping wheelchair tires and also means sitting in ICU and feeling totally helpless and rundown. She has been leading Unwind and self-care initiatives for 5 years and it is finally time to share with those who have been in the arena of special needs. She also makes a mean banana bread.
Tracey Beckett, Co-Facilitator. Tracey is a social worker who has dedicated more than 20 years in a variety of family support roles. Tracey found her passion when she had to rise up and advocate for her daughter to have the same opportunities as her typical peers. She is committed to promoting inclusion of people with disabilities in education, employment and beyond. Tracey is currently the Regional Network Coordinator for the Family Support Institute of BC. When she's not working, you will find her on the sidelines cheering for her kids or on a trail in the great outdoors!
Kara Chater, Administrator. Kara is a Full Time working mom. One of her children has a metabolic disorder that requires multiple visits to both BCCH and her local hospital. Kara values the power of gathering women together. She loves being outside and is up for any adventure. She also prides herself on her organization and efficiency which comes in handy with two active kids and a busy household.
